Operational Analysis of a Power Electronic Converter as a Virtual Synchronous Machine

This research is based on the design and simulation of power electronic converter as virtual synchronous machine. Synchronverter is a topology for inverters that can impersonate synchronous generators. The proposed inverter provides a highly efficient technique for the power systems where the renewable energy resources are to be in contact with the main grid and offers a smooth operation of smart grid. Conventional inverters have shown suboptimal performance when confronted with faults or abrupt changes in load conditions, particularly when integrated with the grid. This causes the inclusion of a resolute synchronization unit, commonly a phase locked loop (PLL). The primary function of the PLL is to offer the grid parameters as reference values to the synchronverters, enabling them to operate under the prescribed parameters required for synchronization. However, the focus of this project pertains to a system in which the PLL and synchronverter exhibit robust and efficient operation, consistently achieving the specified synchronization requirements. This research endeavors to assess the effectiveness of this self-synchronized synchronverter within both islanded and grid-connected modes. The results of the system simulation underscore the superior efficiency of the self-synchronized Synchronverter in its operational performance.
