Insight the Effect of Standard and Non-Standard Lightning Impulse Voltage on Dry-type Nomex Insulation with Temperature Variation

In this study, a standard and five different nonstandard lightning impulse voltages are employed to investigate their effects on the Nomex paper based dry-type insulation and its nano-composite materials. It is important to study the detrimental effect of both standard and non-standard lightning impulses on the insulation dielectrics for design interest. Therefore, the reliability of the insulation material can be assured through the standard as well as few non-standard impulse tests. In addition, design engineers need to understand how insulation behaves when exposed to non-standard impulses. In this context, seven test samples with Nomex paper insulation and nano-composites-based varnish are prepared in the laboratory for the investigation. Therefore, the polarization and depolarization currents (PDC) of the test samples are measured and the equivalent circuit parameters of the test insulation samples are estimated, i.e., extended Debye model. Hence, the different impulses are applied on the insulation model to investigate the effect of the different impulse responses on different insulation samples at different temperatures.
