I. High Dependability Data Handling Systems for In Orbit Operations

Mars Sample Return program and others recent missions ask for some critical operations to be performed autonomously in orbit. Those operations are characterized by potentially catastrophic consequences in case of failure and the need for a high degree of autonomy. At DHS level, it is then necessary to provide a coverage of faults as extensive as possible and a reaction time as short as possible. This paper presents the DHS architecture proposed for two missions: MSR using traditional hardware and processes, in an institutional context, and a second one targeting a demonstration of docking in Low Earth Orbit. That later one with a strong bias toward the so-called new space. After a brief reminder of the aims of those missions a focus is made at both hardware and software level emphasizing the common concepts and differences. A conclusion is drawn for future programs with similar requirements.
