Applying Model-Based Design and Model-Based Systems Engineering for High-Level Design and Verification in Space Applications

This paper presents an innovative approach that utilizes Model-Based Design (MBD) and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for the design and verification for space applications. The paper discusses our design methodology, which encompasses requirements definition, flow-down, and the use of Simulink for high-level modeling. We also demonstrate the integration of High-Level Synthesis (HLS) with HDL Coder to enable FPGA implementation for space applications.Verification plays a crucial role in our approach, covering functional verification, functional coverage analysis, and a comparison between the high-level models and Hardware Description Language (HDL) implementations through co-simulation and vector-based testing techniques.To showcase the practical application of this methodology, we present a real-world use case highlighting the successful utilization of MBD and MBSE for digital processor designs. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages of adopting this approach over traditional methodologies, emphasizing enhanced productivity, improved design quality, and increased confidence in the final implemented solutions.By leveraging MBD and MBSE, our approach offers a comprehensive framework for efficient and reliable design and verification of digital processing, facilitating their seamless integration into various technological applications.
