Research on Independent Modulation Strategy for Each Arm of Arm Multiplexing Modular Multilevel Converter

This paper proposes an independent modulation strategy for each arm based on arm multiplexing modular multilevel converter (AM-MMC). In the strategy, valve controller directly computes the number of activated submodules and distribute it to arm controllers, by relying on the average voltage of submodules, combining with the modulated wave generated by pole controller and integrating in the direction judgment of arm current, aiming at modulating each arm independently. It can avoid data communication between arm controllers, reduce the design complexity of valve control system. Based on the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation environment, a dual-ended system model was built to prove the effectiveness of the independent modulation strategy for each arm proposed in this paper.
