New Method for Secondary Frequency Regulation by Battery Energy Storage System on Viet Nam Power System

Promoting the development of renewable energy sources (RES) has created significant pressure in the operation of the power system, particularly in addressing frequency and voltage stability, which becomes a major challenge as the proportion of renewable energy increases. The integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in power systems has gained significant attention with the increasing proportion of renewable energy sources. One crucial aspect of BESS control is the management of secondary frequency regulation, which plays a vital role in maintaining grid frequency within limits. This paper analyzes BESS's new control methods for secondary frequency regulation in power systems. The application of BESS for controlling inter-domain transmission and dynamic stability in the Vietnam power system, as detailed in this paper, presents a promising approach. The proposed new method has been rigorously tested and proven effective through quasi-dynamic analyses on the 500kV power system in the Central Highlands area of Viet Nam. This approach can improve the operational effectiveness of RES and power transmission lines, leading to greater stability and reliability for the Viet Nam power system.
