Performance Evaluation of Active Power Decoupling (APD) based Single-Phase Full-Bridge Inverter for Renewable Energy Applications

Although single-phase inverters provide several advantages, it is critical to assess the individual requirements of each application. Three-phase inverters may be more appropriate for applications with high power demand or three-phase power distribution. Active Power Decoupling (APD) is a power electronics technology used to solve power quality issues in electrical systems. Here, an LC filter is employed to achieve APD in a single-phase fullbridge inverter with a buck-type architecture. However, the inverter's Direct Current (DC) side capacitor will encounter a ripple at twice the frequency of the power line, resulting in a reduction in the DC bus capacitor's lifespan. The Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) technique involves the occurrence of switching event when the voltage across the switch reaches zero. This reduces the magnitude of voltage and current, reducing the stresses experienced during the switching action. The performance of single-phase full-bridge inverters with buck-type active power decoupling, both with and without an LC filter, is compared in this study. THD (total harmonic distortion) was also measured. When combined with an LC Filter, the proposed system has a low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and a low ripple factor.
