SmartSense: An Intelligent Assistive System for Typhlotic Individuals Using Raspberry Pi

This paper presents a prototype of a smart electronic assistance system designed to aid individuals with visual impairment (typhlotic persons). The proposed system comprises an ultrasonic sensor, a camera, a Raspberry Pi processor, and a headphone. The paramount intention of this research is to construct an electronic toolkit that facilitates visually impaired individuals to navigate obstacles in their path safely and independently. The system employs an ultrasonic sensor integrated into a moccasin-type shoe to detect obstructions in the user's path. When an obstruction is encountered, the sensor relays the information to the Raspberry Pi, which then triggers an audio alert through the connected headphone. Additionally, a camera is mounted on eyeglasses, providing real-time object detection and further enhancing the system's functionality. Users receive audio messages that inform them about the detected objects in their surroundings. The smart moccasin system offers a straightforward yet effective solution for assisting orientationally blind individuals and facilitating their autonomous and secure mobility, utilizing their remaining senses. The integration of ultrasonic sensing, a Raspberry Pi processor, and a camera creates a comprehensive electronic toolkit that promises to enhance the mobility and independence of visually impaired individuals, promoting a safer and more confident navigation experience.
