A 10-Bit Partial Binary Tree Network DAC: An Optimization

This work focuses on enhancing the performance of Digital-to-Analog converters (DACs) in digital systems that frequently require high-performance data conversions. To address mismatch problems between the designed and actual component values that traditional DAC designs face, the work suggests utilizing a novel Dynamic Element Matching (DEM) algorithm called the Partial Binary Tree Network (PBTN). The PBTN algorithm randomizes digital input codes, nearly equalizing the times of each component location, and reduces the requirement for sophisticated encodings while preventing overly complex hardware that could result in errors in the output signal. The study found that the PBTN algorithm is more hardware-efficient than current DEM algorithms and uses less power due to fewer transmission gates. The study also utilized a nonideal operational amplifier to amplify output voltage and make the results more realistic. The work successfully simulated a 10-bit 1-MSB PBTN DAC with DNL and INL values to be −0.00133 LSB and −0.0001 LSB, respectively. The maximum glitch observed is about 82 mV, with a power consumption of 63.26 mW. These findings highlight the potential applications of the PBTN DAC and offer valuable insights for further research in this area.
