Holistic Methodology for Analyzing Power System Contingencies of 33KV Network for Grid Reliability Assessment: A Comprehensive Study

One crucial aspect of the functioning of an energy system is the necessity to guarantee system safety and ensure synchronized protection. A secured network is stable in an energy system, able to withstand disruptions without experiencing sudden emergent states. It is considered stable as there is no overloading or transitory volatility from various events. In contemporary times, the electricity system is expanding in scale and intricacy. The utilization of contingency examination (CA) holds significant importance in the examination of power systems. Contingency Analysis (CA) plays a critical role in power system analysis, particularly when faults occur. The identification of disruptive contingencies that can initiate cascading blackouts poses a significant challenge due to the complex interdependencies among power system components. This research paper seeks to address this challenge by proposing a comprehensive approach for identifying the initial contingencies that have the potential to trigger catastrophic cascading failures in power systems. The efficacy of the proposed identification approach is demonstrated through case studies conducted on IEEE test systems employing various cascade models. This analysis helps quantify the potential impact on the system and guides preventive measures to avert system failures. When a power system experiences a disruption in a transmission line or a generation unit, it can result in voltage collapse, which constitutes a contingency in the system. To pinpoint the transmission lines and generators that have a substantial impact on the stability of the system during an outage, we examine contingencies involving line and generation unit disruptions. Furthermore, these contingencies are ranked to identify the most severe outages that greatly contribute to voltage collapse due to the interruption of a transmission line or a generator.
