Analysis, Monitoring, and Classification System for Apnea in Patients with Down Syndrome

According to WHO, Down syndrome is a congenital disorder linked to chromosome 21 that affects 0.1% of the world population. The respiratory system is its weakest point, causing affectations such as Sleep Apnea that can aggravate the problems derived from this syndrome. Sleep-disordered breathing in this population is poorly described. A low-cost system was developed that combines the acquisition of electromyography (EMG) signals from the larynx, respiratory rate, and flow, which are recorded for subsequent analysis. The developed biomedical system is a viable alternative to polysomnography with the advantage of being scalable, the identification and differentiation of General Apneas, Hypopneas, and Obstructive Sleep Apneas (OSA) are achieved with a friendly interface, which allows real-time monitoring of the respiratory parameters of a patient during sleep).
