An Efficient and Accurate Acoustic Source Localization Algorithm for Large Area

In this paper, we focus on the localization of large area acoustic source at the magnitude of kilometers, and develop the hybrid TDOA/AOA localization algorithm. Firstly, the arrival time difference and direction information are combined and transformed according to geometric relation. Then the nonlinear relation equations such as source position, time difference of arrival and direction are transformed into linear function about source position. Finally, a simple closed-form solution is given. The covariance matrix is derived using the first order Taylor expansion, and the acoustic source location is obtained using the three-step weighted least squares estimation. Numerical simulation shows that the proposed algorithm has higher positioning accuracy and stability than the conventional TDOA and AOA methods. High precision localization of acoustic source for large area can be achieved with just a few measuring nodes.
