Gateways Placement Optimization in Wireless Mesh Networks with Interference and QoS Constraints

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) consist of mesh clients, routers, and gateways. Gateways, directly linked to wired infrastructure, serve as Internet-connected routers. In WMNs, client nodes use the wired setup for data transfer including web content, emails, audio, and video. Due to mixed wired and wireless interfaces, gateways are complex and costly to set up and maintain. Strategic gateway placing is pivotal in WMN design, defining network performance. Each gateway's placement carries significant implications, molding network behavior. Adding gateways increases costs due to higher expenses, while reducing them heightens latency and decreases data throughput. Multiple strategies address gateway placement in WMNs, including iterative greedy algorithms, augmenting algorithms, and game theory-based methods. Despite potential advantages, these techniques encounter limitations, particularly in ensuring Quality of Service (QoS) measures such as network throughput, end-to-end delay, and relay load. Addressing these challenges, we propose the Rec-GT algorithm, combining weighted recursive techniques and graph theory to optimize gateway placement. This integration aims to enhance network throughput, reduce end-to-end delay, and minimize relay load. Our Rec-GT algorithm aims for superior gateway positioning performance. We plan to validate its efficacy through simulations and performance comparisons, evaluating network throughput, end-to-end delay, and relay load on the MATLAB platform.
