Renewable Energy Communities a Practical Case Study Implementation

The focus of this work is to identify and study the utility and advantages of renewable energy communities (REC) nowadays. Portugal is among the two hundred countries that are most concerned about climate change, according to a study carried by the company Meta. With Decree-Law n°162/2019, the REC were boosted, touching on points such as the permission given to self-consumers of renewable energy to produce, consume, store, share and sell electricity without being subject to exaggerated charges. With this master's work, the creation of a REC in the city of Amadora will be simulated, implanting solar panels in a condominium, and analysing the production data of the panels. Comparing later with the consumption data of the same condominium, an analysis will be carried out to understand how much energy would be needed to satisfy the needs of the condominium owners, and how much energy would be sold to the grid in order to be able to monetize the project. The results allow us to conclude that the realization of REC, in addition to producing “green energy” and therefore helping to reduce pollution, also translates into a reduction in the electricity bill of its participants.
