Stability Investigation of Grid-Connected Wind Turbines Supported by Static Synchronous Compensator for Wind Speed Fluctuation

With the rapid increase of wind energy injected into the grid, it is very important and indispensable to study the impact of wind turbine generators (WTG) on grid stability and power quality. The increasing prevalence of wind energy in energy systems is known to cause problems due to the random nature of the wind and changes in the world's climate. The wind force generated depends on the available wind speed. This poses a challenge to the stability and reliability of the power system. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of using the static-synchronous-compensator (STATCOM) to enhance the grid-connected fixed-speed wind farm (WF) stability in cases of wind speed fluctuations. Various wind speed phenomena, such as constant wind speed, linear wind speed change, gust wind speed change, and random wind speed change, are simulated. A simulation model of a three-phase nonlinear constant-speed dynamic grid connected wind turbine induction generators is developed. The wind simulated WF consists of 5 induction generators with a capacity of 3 MW each. Simulation models are executed using the SimPowerSystem blockset and MATLAB/Simulink.
