Using Artificial Intelligence for Padel Training

Padel is a racket sport that has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. It is a mix of tennis and squash and is most played in doubles. It is played in what appears to be a smaller tennis court, however, its novelty is the fact that its court is contained within a combination of glass walls and metallic mesh. Machine learning and AI (artificial intelligence) have also gained great momentum in recent times. In a sporting application, it has been shown that the use of integrated machine learning training programs can improve player performance, either through improved form or better load management. Due to Padel's recent emergence, these technologies have not been investigated for this sport specifically. Therefore, in this paper, we will utilize computer vision, machine learning, and 3D visualization to create a prototype and proof of concept for such a system. The system is broken down into two main segments, the computer vision and machine learning aspect, and the 3D modeling and visualization aspect. The prototype system was tested using two player types to attempt to evaluate its effectiveness and highlight any weaknesses or room for improvement for a complete system.
