Levelized Cost of Hydrogen Analysis for Alkaline Water Electrolysis-Photovoltaic Energy Technology in The Near Future (2025–2050) of Algeria

The Algerian government's efforts to reduce future emissions include widespread adoption of the green hydrogen
$(\mathrm{H}_{2})$
economy. However, inherent uncertainties in decision support endeavours drive the strategic vision of
$\mathrm{H}_{2}$
development. Algerian government planned to install a demonstration plant of 50–100 MW electrolyzer for investigating the technological viability and economic profitability. The choice of electrolysis technology and the renewable source that will be used remain a challenging issue. The treatment of this issue can be done using a model-based decision support including costs assessment. In this context, prediction of the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) produced from clean energies in the near future is of utmost importance. To that end we focused on the Algiers potential to generate green
$\mathrm{H}_{2}$
using multi-mega scale off-grid photovoltaic-
$\mathrm{H}_{2}$
system. Alkaline water electrolyzer is one of the easiest and mature technologies with more than hundred years of experience and thousands of installed plants capable of producing
$\mathrm{n}_{2}$
with high efficiency. To find the lowest LCOH, the system is optimized utilizing a dual-obj ective approach including total hydrogen deficit. A dynamic energy and
$\mathrm{H}_{2}$
management strategy is used. LCOH projection during the period 2025–2050 in Algeria is analyzed, considering the capital costs of the system components are reduced. LCOH declines linearly over the time from 6.65 $/kg in 2025 to reach 3.9 $/kg by 2050. Without
$\mathrm{H}_{2}$
storage device LCOH of the off-grid case drops below 2.5 $/kg in 2050. Evaluation of the LCOH cost-breakdown reflects promising and competitive results for the production of green
$\mathrm{n}_{2}$
for delivery to potential markets.
