A 2-Bit Dual-Polarization Reconfigurable Intelligent Metasurface

In this paper, a dual-polarization reconfigurable metasurface (DP-RIM) at 5G mid-band frequency of 3.3-3.8 GHz is described. The square meta-cell is deliberately designed in a symmetrical form with respect to principal axes, hence the RIM can be tuned independently using voltage-controlled varactor didoes. Whereas a dual 2-bit phase-coding method is used for a DC voltage of 0~10V, the equivalent cell-size is reduced and thus the reflection phases are changed in 4 levels. The proposed DP-RIM provides a new approach to wireless communications that can overcome the obstacles faced by the current 5G mid-band systems.
