Fabrication and Integration of Quantum Dot Based Emitters for Smart Mechanical Watches

New materials and ongoing miniaturization are key enablers to realize thin-film electronics and highly integrated sensors needed for the realization of current technology trends such as Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things. Particular applications are wearable and geometrically customizable devices, that require reliable high performance components in a packaging of increased density. In this work, we present the combination of two emerging technologies: A Quantum Dot based light emitting diode (QD-LED) with an ultrathin and highly flexible Parylene printed circuit board (PCB) to equip a purely mechanical watch with smart features. Doing so, the target application is the pressure monitoring during diving and alerting the user in the event of an exceeded pressure change rate. While the combination of these two technologies enables the functionalization of the otherwise purely mechanical watch as a use case, it moreover paves their way for the next generation of highly integrated QD-based devices.
