Voltage and Current Regulation in Cuk DC-DC Converters having Enhanced Closed-Loop Control using PID Controller

The escalating need for power electronics converters that operate with high efficiency has resulted in a surge of interest in Cuk converters. These converters are renowned for their ability to maintain continuous input/output currents while achieving high levels of efficiency. This research study centers on the small signal analysis of the Cuk converter and the design of its control techniques to improve performance and stability. State-space averaging and linearization techniques yield a transfer function that establishes a correlation between the input and output parameters of the converter. Insights into the converter’s stability, transient response, and frequency-domain properties are provided by this model, which is vital for the construction of robust control systems. Subsequently, the manuscript delves into the investigation of control strategies for the Cuk converter, specifically focusing on voltage-mode and current-mode approaches. The output voltage regulation is achieved through duty cycle adjustment in voltage-mode control, whereas current-mode control provides superior dynamic performance and inherent current-limiting capabilities. A comprehensive analysis of the design of both controllers is presented. The findings indicate an enhancement in the transient response, disturbance rejection, effectiveness in regulating output voltage, and preservation of stability.
