A Review on Active Power Decoupling for Totem-Pole Power Factor Correction Circuit

Single-phase systems have an inherent second harmonic ripple power (SHRP), which is conventionally mitigated using large capacitors at the dc-link, impacting the overall reliability of the system. Active power decoupling (APD) circuits have become an integral technology in single-phase systems, capable of diverting this SHRP into an auxiliary circuit. Several APD circuits have been presented in the literature but APD circuits such as buck, boost, buck-boost, and split-cap have gained attention due to their plug-and-play feature and reduced complexity. APD circuits integrated into power factor correction (PFC) circuits are found in the literature. However, a comparison between these circuits applied to a PFC is not presented. This paper integrates a 1 kW totem-pole PFC circuit with various APD circuits and ripple analysis is performed. To investigate its performance, simulation studies are carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC environment. Finally, a comparison on different APD circuits is provided, focusing on the ripple in dc-link capacitor voltage.
