Designing of Transformer for DC Flyback Converter

In place of a power transformer operating at 50 Hz, a high-frequency transformer can be preferred as it is known that, lower the frequency is, bulkier the device becomes as area product is inversely proportional to frequency. Hence, in this paper, a flyback converter is used inside which there is a high-frequency transformer that operates at a very high frequency. Here flyback converter is used as it uses least number of switches compared to the other isolated DC converters which makes it cost-effective. An open loop flyback converter has been implemented in Ansys Simplorer for which the 12-320V step-up transformer has been designed in Ansys PExpert and for closed loop control of the converter, the PI controller has been designed in the MATLAB Simulink. In hardware different transformer tests have been carried out to check the Working of the designed high-frequency transformer and the converter has been tested for open loop by developing a prototype of the converter yielding 8 watts at 32kHz.
