Analysis of Linear Induction Machines showing the Invariance of End Effects with Number of Turns in the Primary Winding

This paper shows that with all the design parameters remaining unchanged, end effects in a Linear Induction Machine (LIM) is independent of the number of turns in the LIM’s primary winding. This has been shown using electromagnetic analysis and simulation with softwares using Finite Element Method (FEM). Electromagnetic analysis of three LIMs have been carried out at rated current and frequency values. It has been shown that the flux distortion caused by end effects do not vary with the number of turns in the LIM’s primary winding. Similarly, the force ripple does not vary with the number of turns. The results of electromagnetic analysis have been verified using FEM simulation. It has been shown that the flux distortion and the consequent force ripple do not vary with the number of turns in the LIM’s primary winding. The flux distortion and force ripple happen because of end effects only. Hence, end effects is invariant with the LIM’s primary number of turns.
