Reduced-Switch Current-Fed Switched Inverter: Steady-state analysis and PWM control

The Active-Front-End Impedance-Source Inverters (AFE-ISIs) have been investigated in recent literature, as they have the potential to offer a number of benefits, including an increased ac output voltage range, immunity to shoot-through, concurrent operating with both dc and ac loads, and other benefits. Because AFE-ISIs have fewer passive components than Impedance-Source Inverters (ISIs), they are also able to attain a higher power density and a higher efficiency than ISIs. However, there is still a concern over the lower efficiency of AFE-ISIs when compared to the two-stage combination of a boost converter and a Voltage Source Inverter. In this study, the Reduced-Switch Current-Fed Switched Inverter (RSCFSI) is developed as a means of increasing efficiency while decreasing the number of switches in use. RSCFSI demonstrates many of the same benefits as currently available AFE-ISIs but with a reduced number of switches. In this study, we examine both the steady-state analysis of RSCFSI as well as its pulse-width modulation (PWM) control approach. The theoretical analysis that is illustrated in this study has been verified through the use of a laboratory prototype of RSCFSI, and the results of the experiments are exhibited here for verification purposes.
