Introduction to Numerical Linear Algebra [Bookshelf]

This book fills a gap in the existing literature for a serious presentation of numerical linear algebra that is accessible to undergraduates who have taken a basic course in linear algebra. The classic monographs are theoretically oriented and present few, if any, numerical examples. An attractive feature of this text is that instead of a collection of end-of-chapter exercises, exercises as well as worked-out examples are presented in each section. This form of presentation enforces the theory and provides the student with an appreciation of the power of the algorithms to address real-world problems. Overall, this book provides an excellent introduction to numerical linear algebra that is accessible to undergraduate students. Beginning graduate students would also benefit from the text as a preliminary to more advanced treatments or articles in the open literature. The later chapters are (for the most part) independent, giving the instructor the flexibility to choose material to best fit the interests of students and class time. Another nice feature is that MATLAB code corresponding to examples and algorithms from the textbook is available for download from the SIAM website.
