Ion-Mobility Spectrometry – MQ5 Sensor System for Gas Refilling Stations

LPG butane and propane are two of the LPG types that are commercially available for use in households and industries. They are highly dangerous when abrupt change causes an explosion. In a closed system such as connections to nozzle, gaskets, and welded and brazed joints, cracks and holes can be made because of the high pressure and force. In Gas Refilling Stations in the Philippines, tests are done manually causing asphyxia from hypoxia [1]. Thus, we proposed a test method confined to the designed gas tank chamber. In the current practice, employees look for holes or cracks using the procedure “bubble test” and sometimes their noses to detect a leak smell. Due to the possibility of direct toxic effects, propane poisoning results in death. In the combined ion-mobility spectrometry system, four sensors were used in a circle inside the designed chamber system to detect holes and cracks. The proposed method solves health issues regarding exposure to LPG gas.
