Manufacturing and Assembly of the ITER Correction Coils

The ITER Correction Coils (CC) system consists of 3 sets of 6 coils each: Bottom (BCC), Side (SCC) and Top (TCC) Correction Coils. The ITER CC are supplied in-kind by the Chinese Domestic Agencies (CNDA) and the construction is carried out by Chinese Academy of Science Institute ASIPP. The 6 BCC and TCC have been delivered to the ITER Organization. Whereas BCC and TCC are planar coils, SCC are wound on a cylinder and require a completely different line of manufacturing. The SCC are at different stages of the last manufacturing processes, between the assembly of the terminal service box (TSB) and Final Acceptance Tests (FAT). This paper presents the manufacturing process, which involves manufacturing of multi-layer winding of non-circular shape, insertion into a stainless steel case, closed by a powerful 20 kW laser weld, in the vicinity of the CC superconductor insulation. The reliability of the manufacturing processes to manage winding/insulation/welding were essential for achieving the final quality and tolerances of few mm of these 7 m long coils. Some lessons learnt during the CC production components and subsequent work execution will be detailed. The BCC are placed in the ITER tokamak Pit, where they will stay for several years until attachment onto the Toroidal Fields coils (TF). A description of the assembly process for BCC and SCC will be introduced.
