Two Quenched Models for High-Temperature Superconducting Insulated Coils

, the superconductor undergoes a transition from a state of superconductivity to a normal conducting state, resulting in the loss of its superconducting properties. Despite the notable characteristics of high-temperature superconducting tapes, such as their elevated critical temperatures, specific heats and high quenching energies, the occurrence of quenching during their operation remains a possibility. In this paper, in order to assess the quenching of insulating coils, two methods are used to analyze the quenching of insulating coils. The first approach is the widely used
T-A
formulation of coupled heat transfer under a 2D axisymmetric model, which is able to consider the effect of shielding currents holistically. The second method uses a coil 1D structure combined with 2D heat transfer, which accurately reflects the variation of loop physical parameters during coil quenching with voltage and temperature as independent variables. This paper compares and contrasts these two methods and describes their advantages and disadvantages. The combination of these two models allows for a more accurate analysis of the effects caused by coil quenching and provides design guidance for future insulated HTS coils.
