Technical and Economic Design of the Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage Systems for Power System Stability with 80% Renewable Energy-Research Project: HZwo StabiGrid

This paper presents an ongoing project for the study of frequency stability in power systems with 80% renewable energy. This project is called HZwo StabiGrid and aims to create a simulation environment to test the over- and under-frequency capabilities of hydrogen-based energy storage systems. Specifically, this paper aims to summarize the requirements relevant to frequency quality that storage systems should meet in order to maintain grid frequency. Through hardware-in-the-loop simulations and co-simulations, a microgrid testbed will be developed to assess frequency stability. An evaluation of the economic and ecological sustainability of the hydrogen system will be conducted in order to provide recommendations for the operation of a sustainable grid. Ultimately, the HZwo StabiGrid project aims to contribute to the development of grid modernization strategies and stability control strategies to ensure a reliable supply of electricity in future power grids in which renewable energy sources and inverter-based systems will dominate.
