Development of an Improved Fault Detection and Fault Tolerant Control Systems using Event Based Modeling & Estimation Techniques

An improved fault detection and fault tolerant control system using event-based modelling and estimation techniques is developed to fulfill high standard of reliability and safe operation. The developed system consist of a loop incorporating PID controller, two actuator, process plant and two sensor which are remotely monitored through a GSM network. As the controller identifies a fault in the system, control is transfer to the functional loop and the operator receives an SMS alert of any faults that have occurred. Using event-based modelling and estimation techniques, the developed system was able to capture events and their interactions in the system to have more accurate representation of system bahaviour under normal and faulty conditions. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, real time data were procured from an industrial process and the result indicated that the developed system achieved a 5.05% improvement in system performance under faulty condition compared to the current approach. This demonstrates that the proposed system has enhanced fault tolerant control capabilities in the case of fault and better fault detection accuracy.
