Consideration and Specifics for 3D Printed Coil Formers for Power Magnetics

This paper presents a short overview of considerations and specifics related to 3D printing of coilformers for power electronics magnetics. Major standards that manage coilformer production and properties are discussed. Specifics to the 3D printing of the coilformers are presented. An example of producing a coilformer with controlled parameters used for a transformer for an LLC converter is provided. The results from this test show that using 3D printing to control the geometry of the coilformer allows for fine adjustment of the leakage inductance of the transformer.
