Monitoring Wind Turbine using Internet of Things: A Systematic Mapping Study

Wind power is one of the most effective sources of green energy, which has evolved since the late 1990s. This green energy source is based on producing energy using Wind Turbines (WT). Recently, many researchers have investigated ways of monitoring and controlling WT using different technologies. However, to our knowledge, no systematic mapping study (SMS) has been conducted on monitoring and controlling the WT using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This paper performed an SMS using a set of 25 studies selected based on an automated search in five digital databases. This set of studies is classified according to the following criteria: publication year and venue, collected data, security measures, networks and protocols, work type, and domain of application. This mapping study revealed that the main publication sources are conferences and journals. Voltage, current, and temperature are the most collected data. The solutions proposed are small-scale prototypes and experiences using different types of sensors and microcontrollers. This study also revealed that more than a third of the proposed solution does not mention or have any security measure and the most domain of application is monitoring and controlling WT using IoT technologies.
