Development trends in the sensor technology: a new BCG matrix analysis as a potential tool of technology selection for a sensor suite

Presents a new variant of the BCG (Boston Consulting Group) matrix analysis on sensor technologies. This classifies technologies in four classes on the basis of the application growth rate of the technology on one axis and competence available on the other. This paper applies the above analysis in the area of night vision. The development trends in the sensor technologies worldwide like: interfacing with computers, distributed mechanisms of working, MEMS, miniaturization of sensors, multi-sensor fusion, incorporation of intelligence, smart sensors, networking, satellite linkage, sensors as integral part of systems, interoperability, IEEE standards, unattended ground sensors, complementary ways of working vs. competition, cost reduction, full spectrum coverage, improved platforms, real-time image and signal processing with embedded software, sensors contributing to automatic target recognition systems and creation of information on the basis of available information or data can be some of the parameters to decide the application growth rate of technologies. Some of these do contribute in deciding the competence available, which will vary case to case. This analysis can broadly guide the design of future sensor suites.
