GaN-based Green Emitting Micro-LED Array for Visible Light Communications

Recently, Micro-LEDs have attracted growing attention due to their excellent current spreading, high efficiency, and large modulation bandwidth. Green light emitters are useful in underwater visible light communication (VLC) link because of low light loss, but requires both high optical power and high data transmission rate. In this work, we fabricated and characterized green micro-LED arrays. The micro-LED pixel has a diameter of 10 μm, and the pixels are connected in parallel. At 10 mA, the optical power of the micro-LED is measured to be 1.64 mW. Using on-off keying (OOK) modulation, the 15 x 15 array achieves a data rate of 700Mbps with a bit-error ratio (BER) of 1.6×10

. This work presents the potential for high-performance green Micro-LED arrays in VLC.
