Mode Dependent Loss Equalized Few-Mode Fiber Photonic Lantern

We propose and fabricate an abnormal photonic lantern by controlling the fusion splicing parameters to generate a refractive index modified waveguide structure at the fusion splicing region between the tapered bridge fiber bundle and the two-mode fiber (LP

and LP

mode), which allows us to manipulate the attenuations of different modes, as a result we can customize the abnormal photonic lantern with different differential mode attenuation (DMA). The proposed device can equalize mode dependent loss for two LP mode transmission, therefore it can not only accomplish mode multiplexing and demultiplexing, but also mode equalization at the same time, which will be very helpful in the few-mode fiber transmission system.
