Control of Electric Power Conversion Systems

As of 2023 power conversion systems are present in nearly all energy, industry, and mobility sectors with an estimated market size of more than US$ 23 billion per year. Such ubiquitous utilization of power electronic converters enables high levels of power control and adaptation to a wide spectrum of process needs at good energy efficiency levels. Nonetheless, the complexity of power grids grows manifolds and calls for new ways and requirements to control the underlying power conversion systems. In this chapter, we provide an overview of power conversion systems modeling, control structures and performance requirements for both grid‐connected converters and industrial drives. Moreover, we chart emerging requirements and operational challenges that point to research advancement in systems analysis, control, and estimation that would enable the next generation of power conversion systems.
