HIGH GAIN CONVERTERS

High gain DC–DC converters are DC converters that have a high output voltage to input voltage ratio. This chapter presents various voltage‐boosting mechanisms, along with an explanation for each mechanism in example converters. Voltage multiplier circuits are simple, inexpensive circuits that typically consist of diodes and capacitors. These circuits can generally be divided into two categories: voltage multiplier rectifiers that are used at the output stage of converters to boost voltage and internal voltage multiplier circuits that are embedded within a converter's topology. Switched capacitor converters are converters that can perform voltage boosting without the use of any magnetic components. More flexibility in the synthesis of high‐gain converters with magnetic coupling, greater gains, and higher converter efficiency can be achieved if inductors are implemented with separate and distinct primary windings instead of tapped windings. The chapter concludes by summarizing the voltage‐boosting mechanisms and compares their various properties.
