Neuromodulation by Electromagnetic Field Exposure in the Intermediate Frequency Range

This research study, focused on the human exposure to electromagnetic fields in the Intermediate Frequency (IF) range, shows that the subthreshold continuous IF exposure could modulate the innate neurological activity via facilitation of the neural excitation. The results were obtained using the SENN (Spatially Extended Nonlinear Node) electrostimulation model. The analysis suggests that the subthreshold neuron stimulation by a homogeneous continuous sinusoidal electric field in the IF range increases the excitability of a neuron, resulting in neural facilitation, which can modulate the normal physiological activity of a neuron. This finding could be significant for assessing the adversity of the EMF exposure in the IF range, as the human exposure guidelines don't take into account the neuromodulation of the regular innate nerve activity, but only the excitation of a silent nerve.
