Ultra-wide-band hybrid tellurite/silica fiber Raman amplifier

Summary form only given. We achieved the largest reported seamless gain bandwidth of 135 nm (from 1497 to 1632 nm) with a minimum gain more than 20 dB for optical fiber amplifiers with a novel hybrid tellurite/silica fiber Raman amplifier. The maximum and minimum gains in the gain-band of the amplifier were 34.6 and 22.8 dB, respectively. The noise figure was less than 8.3 dB and the output power was more than 5 dBm/ch or 14.5 dBm/total with a simple gain equalizer. The amplifier was successfully used as a pre-amplifier in an eight-channel /spl times/ 10-Gb/s transmission experiment with signal wavelengths in the S-, C-, and L-bands over an 80-km standard SMF with a BER of less than 10/sup -11/. The amplifier also provided a dispersion equalization function because it had a built-in negative-slope dispersion compensation fiber as its silica Raman gain medium.
