Low-Power Inductor-Less Optical Receiver for 50G PON in 28nm CMOS

This paper proposes a low-power inductorless optical receiver for 50G PON optical network unit in 28nm CMOS. A feedforward-structure TIA is utilized with a trans-impedance gain of
$\mathbf{50}\mathbf{dB}\mathbf{\Omega}$
, which is almost doubled compared to the single-stage TIA with the same bandwidth. With energy efficiency of 0.34pJ/bit, the whole receiver achieves a trans-impedance gain of
$\mathbf{74.6}\mathbf{dB}\mathbf{\Omega}$
with equivalent input noise current of
$\mathbf{3.14} \boldsymbol{\mu} \mathbf{Arms}$
and input noise density of
$\mathbf{20.3}\ \mathbf{pA}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$
