Abstract:

Permanent Magnet Flux Switching Machines (PMFSMs) have become a popular choice in various applications due to their high efficiency and power density. However, conventional circular stator PMFSMs (CS-PMFSMs) exhibit poor utilization of space and weak compactness that result in comparatively lower torque density and higher cost. Therefore, in recent years, the design of PMFSMs has been optimized to achieve improved performance, with a focus on reducing cost and increasing torque density. In this paper, a novel hexane-type stator PMFSM (HS-PMFSM) topology that differs from CS-PMFSM is introduced and electromagnetically evaluated using the finite element analysis (FEA) technique. The main advantage of the HS-PMFSM is its unique stator geometry, which allows for a higher utilization of space and a compact structure; therefore, a higher torque density and lower cost can be achieved compared to CS-PMFSMs. The comparative analysis reveals that at approximately same volume, number of turns, as well as electrical and magnetic loading, HS-PMFSM achieves higher torque density than the conventional CS-PMFSM.
