Generalized FOM for Multiphase Converters with Inductors

This paper focuses on details of the proposed generalized figure of merit (FOM) that allows us to formally quantify and compare the advantages and benefits of multiphase converters with very different designs and approaches for magnetic energy storage components. The proposed FOM also works for different converter topologies, which is illustrated by the optimization of the inverting buck-boost for 5G applications. Increased efficiency contributes to energy savings, while better thermals at full load enable a solution with limited size.
