A Robust Wide-Area Fault Location Method for Transmission Lines With Uncertainties in Measurements and Network Parameters

This letter presents a robust wide-area fault location method that accurately pinpoints the fault point while remaining robust against outliers in both measurements and network parameters. The conventional least-squares model for fault location is reformulated as an errors-in-variables (EIV) model, which accounts for outliers in both the observation vector composed of measurements and the coefficient matrix embodying network parameters. This restructured problem is then solved by employing a robust weighted total least-squares (RWTLS) approach. The testing results on the IEEE 39-bus test system verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
