Supervised Droop Controller Based on Virtual Synchronous Generator for Islanded Microgrid

Managing distributed resources to satisfy the soaring demand, minimize power losses, and integrate renewable energy sources is a viral research topic due to its complexity and anticipated benefits. The developed management system is required to acquire certain properties to allow rapid response during transient disturbances and guarantee power sharing between different distributed generators. More vitally, the control system needs to induce inertia into the Microgrid to regulate load frequency response especially when operating in islanding mode. A virtual synchronous generator strategy is typically implemented to achieve this goal; however, this strategy is associated with several disadvantages required to be addressed. Combining this strategy with the droop control strategy has proven its effectiveness in many study cases and alleviated the previous weaknesses. Additionally, a supervisory controller was utilized in this research to ensure unified targets for the involved DG inverters and maintain power sharing. The proposed controller was validated using two simulation scenarios that included two different possible configurations of DGs. The results demonstrated that the Microgrid maintained performance under IEEE standards, although one of the generators relocated to a remoter geographical location.
