Analysis of the heat generation of liquid metal battery during charging and discharging

Because of its flexible and efficient features, the battery technology has become an important development direction in the field of large-scale power energy storage. Among them, liquid metal batteries have the broad application prospects in the energy storage field due to the advantages of low cost, long life, high safety and large capacity. As a result of the high operation temperature, the thermal issues of liquid metal batteries have long been a question of great interest in a wide range of fields. However, the heat generation power is difficult to be measured through experiments. In this paper, a multi-physics model is proposed to calculate the heat generation power. The accuracy of the model is validated by the experimental temperature data. In the model, the reversible and irreversible heat generation are calculated to evaluate the difference between liquid metal batteries and lithium ion batteries.
