Comparative Study on DC Winding Induced Voltage Pulsation of Wound Field Flux Modulation Machines Having Different Iron Core Structures

The wound field flux modulation machine (WFFMM) has attracted increasing attention due to its low cost and high rotor robustness. However, the DC winding induced voltage pulsation is one of the major problems in the WFFMM, which challenges the control of the DC winding current. In this paper, five different WFFMMs with different iron structures, including conventional WFFMM, partitioned stator WFFMM (PS-WFFMM), WFFMM with magnetic bridge, WFFMM with segmental rotor and variable flux reluctance machine (VFRM) are globally optimized under some same constraint conditions. The DC winding induced voltage and the average torque of these topologies are compared and it can be found that the VFRM is the best candidate with both high average torque and low peak-to-peak value of DC winding induced voltage among different topologies.
