Research on Performance of Low-Voltage High-Current BLDC Motors with Different Winding Configurations Used in Aviation Starting System

This paper presents two different designs of permanent magnet brushless direct current (PM BLDC) motor for aeronautical starting system, and makes a comparative study on the electromagnetic performance of the concentrated winding and the distributed winding of the BLDC starter motor. First, two types of BLDC starter motors with different winding structures are designed to meet the requirements of small size and high reliability. Second, the centralized winding and distributed winding are analyzed and compared respectively. Then, the 2 dimensional finite element method (2D FEM) is used to compare electromagnetic properties of the motors with different winding structures under the same rated voltage and rated torque conditions. Finally, the prototypes of BLDC starter motors are manufactured and tested to verify the analysis.
