Research-based learning as an educational tool to generate proposals that impact on the SDG-13

This paper analyzes the implementation of a collaborative research-based learning (RBL) activity with undergraduate students from Latin America and the Caribbean. Participating university students from the Mexican host university collaborated remotely in a digital environment with students from Ecuador and the Dominican Republic facilitated by the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) methodology. The study was conducted using quantitative analysis via standardized surveys on the Likert scale and text analysis, and qualitative analyses of open-ended student reflections. Through the activity presented herein, students developed transversal competencies, such as communication, collaborative work, negotiation, and decision-making. In addition, students enriched their cultural background and awareness and recognized research as a valuable tool to make informed proposals. Since the context of the activity is Sustainable Development Goal 13, climate action, students understood the impact and urgency of working collaboratively and globally to achieve climate action goals.
