Fundamental Field Experiments of OFDMA Systems Using VHF-band in Urban Area

OFDMA mobile communication systems in the VHF band are being studied to achieve transmission speeds of several Mbps while covering an area of several tens of kilometers, which is larger than the current communication area (1–2 km) of cellular systems, and to transmit various control signals and image information for the Internet of Things and Vehicle-to-Everything. In particular, ARIB STD-T103 and IEEE 802.16n are standardized communication systems using OFDMA in the VHF band, and their transmission performance has already been evaluated using computer simulation. Moreover, their performances have been evaluated in laboratory experiments by developing actual radio equipment. This study shows the outdoor transmission characteristics of OFDMA systems operating in the VHF band in an urban area. The evaluations were conducted using OFDMA system with base and mobile stations compliant with ARIB STD-T103 mode 1 and IEEE 802.16n at 195 MHz. It was demonstrated that error-free transmission was achieved over an area of approximately 10 km, even in a line-of-sight mobile environment.
