Research on Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) Method for Early Safety Assessment of Advanced Non-LWR

The continuous advancement of research related to advanced non-LWR (Light Water Reactors) has brought many new design elements to nuclear reactors. Accordingly, how to conduct safety analysis on these new reactors to provide effective support for safety supervision and management has become one of the hotspots in the nuclear power safety field. To this end, international institutions such as EPRI are exploring a method that uses Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) to identify potential hazards in the early design process of reactors and evaluate their mitigation characteristics, and provide support for Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PRA/PSA) based on the evaluation results. This paper investigates the relevant application of PHA in advanced non-LWR in the world, introduces the "PHA-to-PRA" project led by EPRI, and takes the Molten Salt Reactor (MSRE) project as a specific case to show how to apply the PHA method to advanced non-LWR. The article aims to provide an advanced research approach for researchers in the field of nuclear power safety, especially those related to advanced reactor types.
